Workshop Oceanic Media

Drawing inspiration from the recent interest in the sea in media studies (i.e. Adamowsky 2017, Balsom 2018, Elias 2019, Starosielski 2015) the workshop aims to investigate the historical as well as current aesthetic, technological, (geo-)political, ecological, material, and epistemological entanglements between media and the sea. The sea as geopolitical space, contact zone and screen serves as starting point for a questioning of mediatized (memory) seascapes in the anthropocene. In face of the vast man-made irreversible changes in the oceanic world, how can its remains and histories be investigated?
Therefore the workshop looks at the afterlife and the continuities of colonialism and the transatlantic slave trade in today’s media infrastructures and logistics. It also addresses visualizations and representations of climate change and of contemporary migration movements, as well as its media practices. Following an archeological approach the history of underwater cinematography and its affinity with scientific film comes into view, in which the sea is not only the subject of knowledge production but at the same time entangled with its many metaphors and imaginations.
The workshop brings together artists and scholars investigating, imagining and intervening (into) the linkages between media and the sea.
